Libellulidae (Skimmers)

The family Libellulidae is one of the most diverse family of dragonflies found in Alabama and Mississippi, comprising 43 species in 17 genera. The nymphs may be found in nearly any permanent or temporary aquatic habitat, although they are less commonly found in flowing waters. As with most other odonate nymphs, skimmers are usually brownish or greenish, with some mottling or banding. The presence/absence and location of dorsal hooks on the abdomen, the relative size and shape of the lateral spines on abdominal segments 8 and/or 9, and the arrangement of setae on the mouthparts are some of the most important characters used to differentiate libellulid nymphs.
