Gomphurus modestus

(Gulf Coast Clubtail)

Gomphurus modestus is a strikingly marked dragonfly that is very similar in size and appearance to the closely related G. dilatatus and G. lineatifrons. This elusive species is rather widely distributed throughout Mississippi, and it also occurs in a few streams in west and south Alabama. The habitat is most often medium to large, silty rivers (where it occasionally co-occurs with G. dilatatus); however, it also can be found at smaller, tannic, sandy streams, especially in the extreme southern parts of both states.
