AMERICAN LADY

Vanessa virginiensis

A common and widespread species that is expected to occur throughout both Alabama and Mississippi.  Lower surface of hindwing has two large eyespots.  Upper surface of hindwing has a row of submarginal spots that are often connected by smeared dark line.  White dot on orange cell of upper forewing is diagnostic.  Caterpillars feed on Pussytoes and form nests of leaves sewn together with silk.  Similar species: Painted Lady
