FIERY SKIPPER

Hylephila phyleus

Common and widespread throughout both Alabama and Mississippi, flying nearly year round in our region.  Male is bright yellow-orange below with brown spots on hindwing; female is more brown-orange with similar spots on hindwing.  Upper surface of wings of male orange and black with "sawtooth" margins; females more brown with orange markings.  Short antennae.  Similar species: Sachem and Whirlabout
