Cicindela (Cicindela) splendida

(Splendid Tiger Beetle)

Cicindela splendida is known from a handful of old specimens collected in the northern half of Mississippi; in Alabama it is known from three historical records in the northeast quarter of the state. This species is usually closely associated with open, red clay soils with little or no vegetation. Due to the extremely localized, patchy distribution of this habitat in our area, it is possible that this species occurs in additional areas that have yet to be discovered. Adults are active in the early Spring (March - May) and again in the Fall (September - October).
