BLACK SWALLOWTAIL

Papilio polyxenes

Common throughout both Alabama and Mississippi, flying spring through fall.   Males' upper surface is black with wide submarginal band of yellow and a marginal row of yellow dots.  Females lack the submarginal yellow bands and have more blue on the upper surface of the hindwings.   Both males and females have a small yellow dot along the leading edge of the forewing.  Lower surface of hindwings of both males and females black with a submarginal and median band of yellow-orange spots and a paler extra spot.  The eyespot on the hindwing with a black "pupil" is also diagnostic in our region.
