COMMON BUCKEYE

Junonia coenia

Expected to occur in all counties throughout both Alabama and Mississippi and flies nearly year round in our area.  Unmistakable, with large multicolored eye spots on the dorsal side of both fore and hindwings, a pale bar on the forewing, and bright orange along posterior edge of the hindwing.  The ventral surface of individuals in the spring and summer are more uniformly tan but become brighter and "rosy" in the fall.
