EASTERN COMMA

Polygonia comma

Expected to occur throughout both Alabama and Mississippi and probably more common than its current known distribution for these two states.  Dorsal surface of wings orange with black spots and brown marginal bands.  The forewing has a diagonal band of three black spots but lacks the black "dash" of the closely related Question Mark.  Summer form has a darker hindwing than winter form.  Ventral surface of hindwing has a silvery "comma" shaped marking, hence the common name.  Similar species: Question Mark
