APPALACHIAN TIGER SWALLOWTAIL

Papilio appalachiensis

In Alabama, this species is known from only Jackson County. Described in 2002, it is a close relative of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, but can be differentiated by its larger size and paler yellow color.  Additional field marks include: a solid yellow ventral submarginal band on the forewing as compared to disjointed spots in Eastern Tiger and a pale blue submarginal band on the ventral hindwing that is wider than that of Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.    Similar species:  Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
